Review of Burke & Hare (2010) by Lenny R — 16 Sep 2011
Unfunny. The 'jokes' in the screenplay are virtually impossible to detect, so I suppose it's no wonder Landis had so much trouble timing them. It's not the subject matter that's the problem (well, maybe the Macbeth business), because it's an absurd enough situation that humour could be gleaned from it.
The talented cast all try very hard to make it work, but have little success. It was an odd, almost infuriating experience; I was watching the movie, thinking it should have been hilarious, seeing how hard everyone was trying to MAKE it hilarious, but at the same time awkwardly aware of just how not-hilarious it was.
It's a pity, because I'd had high hopes.
