Review of Buried (2010) by Steven D — 02 Jun 2012
Buried is a claustrophobic, nerve-jangling thriller. In many ways, the set-up is similar to 127 Hours, a movie focused on the life-threatening plight of a single man. The success of the film requires skillful acting by Ryan Reynolds and skillful direction by Rodrigo Cortes to make an inherently static situation dynamic.
Reynolds plays an American civilian truck driver in Iraq captured in an ambush; buried in a coffin with a cell phone, a pocket knife, two glow sticks, water, and a cigarette lighter; and ordered to negotiate his own $5,000,000 ransom.
The movie is simultaneously an indictment of the aftermath of the American invasion of Iraq. This is Ryan Reynolds's best performance.
