Review of Burden of Dreams (1982) by Andrzej B — 18 Apr 2009
An excellent companion piece to Fitzcarraldo, like Hearts of Darkness is to Apocalypse Now, Burden of Dreams shows the gallons of blood, sweat and tears that went into the making of such an ambitious and seemingly impossible-to-make film for nearly 4 years.
Like Klaus' character in the film, Herzog has to overcome insurmountable odds just for the sake of filming 5 to 10 second scenes. Watching this film shows the viewer how masterful (and how undeniably insane and obsessed) Werner Herzog is, a true visionary in filmmaking, and how one's passion can nearly kill them.
