Review of Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) by Tatjana V — 13 Jul 2008
What a lovely surprise TCM and my Tivo collaborated upon! This film is an Otto Preminger miracle starring Sir Laurence Olivier. Even if you know the story all the way through, you nevertheless watch in horror as the story unfolds around mental illness. The story surrounds the disappearance of a 4-year old American Girl in London. She is called Bunny Lake. The inspector immediately senses something is awry. Strangely there seems to be no evidence that the child ever existed... The brother lies, adding to doubts an you are left thinking, what the hell is going on here? Hold that thought.
The script is daring, to say the very least. The characters are real, human and full of dimension. None is good or bad but every shade of grey with mysterious motivations. The Cinematography is hypnotizing. I am certain that the twist was spellbinding in 1965. I recommend giving yourself into the film so you can also be surprised. Dare I admit I was? Yes, Otto had me.
This is certainly one of film's great masterpieces and one of my Tivo's greatest surprises.
