Review of Bumblebee (2018) by Rahul M — 26 Dec 2018
This movie basically takes what works from Transformers (2007) and builds on it. There's no more action, side characters, or plot points (save for the shirtless guy) than necessary. It uses this space to become a character driven coming of age story. Like the Jason Bourne films, it uses its rare fight scenes to complete narrative elements, to reveal character. And that's what takes this from being another Transformers film to, well, a solid film.
Hailee Steinfeld is somehow able to take her scenes with a CGI partner and evoke raw emotion from the viewers. She nails the normal girl dealing with huge problems role like she did in The Edge Of Seventeen. I hope she expands from these character types, because she has the talent to do so much more.
One gripe I have is the character development of Memo, played by Jorge Lendeborg Jr. He works at the amusement park, and pines after Nadine. He's got a bit more courage after the film, but I didn't see much change besides that.
As a male viewer, I now empathize with females who watch action films (heck, even some dramas), and see female love interest be... well just that.
Overall though, with a well rounded performance from the cast, this film is definitely worth it's ticket price!
