Review of Bully (2011) by Brooke W — 23 Dec 2008
I can't recommend any one watch this movie - it is just this side of a "barely-legal" porno with a plot.
With that out of the way, it is actually a high quality film. A wise commentary on current American culture (lost 20-somethings with dis-empowered parents) whose wisdom lies in simply laying it out nakedly (pun intended), rather than actually *commenting*. The acting from this ensemble troupe is absolutely superb, with only the exception of "The Hitman". "Bully" lays bare what happens to a culture that has lost its "cult"... that is to say, that has rejected its claim on judging good and evil, that has nothing in common to worship worthily, nothing of substance to co-value, any more.
"Bully" also has keen insight into the effect on the human person of a comatized dark fantasy becoming an all too concrete reality. Here, the interplay between the video game (Mortal Kombat) in the movie, the rag-tag gang's fantasizing about committing murder, and their reactions to meeting their own demons face to face, is absolutely brilliant.
The brilliance is driven home by the fact that "Bully" is based on actual events.
