Review of Bully (2011) by Brad B — 05 Nov 2010
The first Larry Clark movie I ever saw and I hoped it would be the last.
After getting introduced to the main group I soon realize this was not going to go smoothly. I've never read the book this is based on but I wonder how far the movie strayed away from the source material. Also, what was the story? Yeah I got what this was about but by the time it was explained I stopped giving a crap.
The characters in this film made me want to put my head through the TV. Lets run down the main characters: the bully, a stoner, a shallow co-dependent girl, a slut, a ditz, a junkie, a loser, and a gang member. This motley crew is usually a good combination, it worked in Trainspotting, but with the way they act and treat each other, who am I supposed to care about?
These are the kids in high school that I didn't associate myself with because they didn't give a damn about anyone but themselves and wound up broke, living in a trailer park, in prison, or dead. They're also the ones who didn't mess with me after I beat the shit out of one. If anyone who reads this is still in high school I would recommend this as a warning about what bad decisions will take you.
This movie frustrates the hell out of me. The only reason I saw it was because it was on the IFC channel and there was nothing else on. Reality check: AVERAGE TEENS DON'T ACT THIS WAY!
