Review of Bully (2011) by Alex R — 08 Jun 2016
Consistently engrossing, Larry Clark's confronting pic is kept grounded by an impressive, flawless young cast. The disturbing relationship between the domineering Nick Stahl (absolutely outstanding) and Brad Renfro (all grown up and all the better for it) is brought to life with conviction. Also, Rachel Miner, Bijou Phillips, Kellii Garner and Leo Fitzpatrick are excellent, with a scene-stealing Michael Pitt in exceptional form and, along with the self-loathing Stahl, leaves the strongest impression.
Clark's exploration into lonely, alienated layabout youths is made with alarming honesty and it's frightening to see how nonchalant some of these youngsters agree to killing someone they don't even know. Powerful stuff.
