Review of Bullitt (1968) by Tomas T — 11 Aug 2010
Steve McQueen is the Bullitt, rock hard and ice cool cop who is mixed up in a political game where a man of strong principals is needed.
Bullit storywise is nothing short of a classical crime thriller, there is nothing in the story to set it aside from the masses, instead where Bullitt shines is the actors and directing. Starting with the actors, Steve McQueen pulls one of his best performances and suits the role of unyielding cop superbly. Other actors do their job admirably, but S.McQueen naturally parades on the spotlights for a good part of the movie and proves to be the right man for the job. Directing and dialogue in the movie are ultra realistic, rarely you see so many details in the chattering and on screen than with Bullitt which help to create a very believable surrounding.
Extra notion must be given for the excelent car chase towards the end of the movie, rarely one sees such an intense chase without a single dialogue and the nerve wrecking chase is all thanks to the actors, speaking with only their cool but clearly distressed faces.
Bullit is definitely a cool movie but nowhere near great. It painstakingly needs something to put it aside from the rest and the must be included romance scenes are not it!
