Review of Bullitt (1968) by Bradley R — 10 Mar 2009
After a couple of failed attempts to watch this pop-culture fave, I finally was able to sit through this McQueen "essence of cool" cops and robbers ride. I can now say that I did enjoy it, although not as much as a 40 year old might have in 1968 when it came out.
I can imagine the car chase thrilling movie-goers, however, in comparing it to my favorite film of all time, not only is the film nowhere near as good as the French Connection, the chase is inferior as well.
That's perhaps too harsh, for it is a good chase, it's just not as good as the subsequent French Connection chase that surpassed it. All in all, Bullit is a "cool" film, with McQueen being the ultimate movie star.
I love police movies. This movie is behind The French Connection, Dirty Harry and Training Day, but it is very good.
