Review of Bulletproof Monk (2003) by Reece F — 16 Jul 2009
This is solid B-movie entertainment. If you're a fan of Mystery Science Theater, you will likely enjoy this movie. It has awful writing and outrageous plot devices, but it does not take itself too seriously, so it all ends up adding to the entertainment experience. Although a bit pseudo-mystical and philosophical at times, the movie knows what it is: a silly kung fu movie.
The fight scenes are unfortunately pretty blah and uninspired, but entertaining enough. The choreography is subpar, but occasionally clever. The execution is solid though, which can make it exciting at times. And, the biggest plus, we actually get long, unedited fight sequences, which are pretty rare even among the better kung fu movies, so even though the fights aren't great, you can at least follow them and see what is happening.
Also, the sound track is right out of late 90s video games and laser tag joints, so that was fun.
I rented this movie for a buck on i-tunes, and I would say that it is worth that and one and half hours of your time on a rainy day off if you enjoy silly B movies.
