Review of Bullet Train (2022) by Healingtoolbox — 05 Aug 2022
Buster Keaton >Jackie Chan > David Leitch.
I am NOT a John Wick fan. Death wish scenarios like Wick series and most Hong Kong actioners aren't for me. If you liked any of these, you'll like Bullet Train:
2014 John Wick 1 (David co-directed, uncredited).
2017 Atomic Blonde (directed by).
2018 Deadpool 2 (directed by).
2019 Apple Snowbrawl (Short).
2019 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
Where John Wu, Guy Ritchie and Hong Kong actioners are DEATH-oriented, endless thumbing your nose at death, pretending not to fear death, Buster, Jackie and David's films are about the FUN of stunt work and how to merge good acting and character arcs into stunt work.
Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Tangerine), I think could be another Jason Statham with his own unique persona and style.
Where John Wick is equally obsessed with death as his attackers, Pitt's floaty, unmoored character--Like Buster and Jackie--contrasts with the motivations of his attackers. Pitt leans, into the "hippie-dippie, happy-go-lucky side" of his nature.
Excerpts from reviews I agree with:
... making the elaborate and the ridiculous feel if not plausible, then certainly compelling and fun ... ... brazen intricacy is the point, taking precedence over realism or narrative purpose. Bullet Train carries you along through sheer verve and audacity. ...
