Review of Bullet to the Head (2012) by Mir O — 27 May 2013
Walter Hill takes a trip back to the 80's films where he made his name. Bullet is a big nod to 48hrs, pitching a criminal to work alongside and cop to resolves some issues. The character differences are quite broad however. Stallone plays Jimmy, a hardened hit man who is double crossed after a hit. Sung Kang comes in as a Washington cop Taylor Kwon, an efficient but by the book officer, who also has an interest in who sanctioned the hit.
After the initial hit Jimmy's partner is killed in a bar as they wait to be paid. Jimmy makes it out and is contacted by Kwon claiming they have mutual interests. The hit had been on a disgraced former partner of Kwon's.
So they reluctantly(obviously) work together with some good banter and insults along the way. There's some quite standout moments of violence, mainly consisting of people being shot in the face. Hill was never shy to mix comical edge with extreme violence and he does have a knack for it.
It's adapted from a graphic novel, one I dont know, but it really just feels like a nostalgia trip for Hill & Stallone. Jason Momoa romps around as the mercenary, Keegan, with a love of his job that borders on the insane and no one is safe.
An enjoyable ninety minutes all told. Nothing special but if you like your buddy action movies it's just the ticket.
