Review of Bullet to the Head (2012) by Shawn S — 10 Aug 2013
Bullet To The Head... I had a lot of hope going into this film. It seemed like it'd be a return to the more fisticuff style of action with Stallone in the lead. Sung Kang is cast in a role originally meant for Thomas Jane (who I'd have loved to have seen, not that he'd have been able to save the film), and he does a good enough job. The problem with this film is the pacing, and the phoned in action set pieces.
Bullet to the Head doesn't seem to realize that, though action fans love to see explosions and fight sequences, we don't like to see the same thing two, three or four times... and this film is a prime example of doing just that. It just jumps through the same hoops that have been jumped through by past films (or itself, earlier on), but does so in a much less stellar way. Stallone seemed uninterested throughout, and Sung Kang doesn't have very much to do.
I loved Sung Kang in the Fast And The Furious films, but I didn't see him doing too much butt kicking here. He really seemed like his talent was overall wasted. He gets to fight once or twice throughout, and really, that's a shame. Not to mention, his character isn't that likable. Speaking of which, niether is Stallone in this film. His character just seems to do whatever he can to be unlikable, and since he's the lead... it just kind of ruins the film. Overall, this film isn't worth the time to watch unless you are a hardcore Stallone fan, but even then, I doubt you'll get much enjoyment out of this by the books borefest.
