Review of Bullet Boy (2004) by Paul K — 25 Aug 2008
I'd be lying if I said that I would have heard of this movie if not for being a huge Massive Attack fan. With that said, this was definitely an important picture. Does it say anything new? Not really.
I glanced at some reviews that said more or less the same thing, and one in particular that made a funny, but true, comparison to Carlito's Way. You're not going to really learn anything from this film if you're an avid moviegoer.
However, the execution is so pure and so realistic, that it's difficult to turn anyone away from such a heartwarming film filled to the brim with a brilliant warmth that only the participating actors, and the seemingly adept direction of Saul Dibb could create.
I really loved the character of Ricky, his girlfriend, and his family, most especially his little brother. Saul Dibb knows how to not only capture our hearts with a gripping, violent, story, but also knows all the right cinematic techniques in capturing innocence, shame, and heartache.
Oh, and the Massive Attack score was appropriately atmospheric and moody, as well!
