Review of Bull Durham (1988) by Steve G — 25 Jul 2008
Hard to believe that I first saw this - and reviewed it as a journalist - 20 years ago. To be frank, I cared very little about it back then, other than thinking Susan Sarandon was hot (with several additional "T's").
Now, having watched and enjoyed real live baseball (OK, "the Reds") for the last 3 or more years, I can better see how intrinsic to America this movie really is, and precisely why it is often regarded as "one of the best sports films ever". I can, at last, appreciate and understand the nuances, the phrasing and the 'baseball sentimentality' of the story.
I can also contemplate the fanciful notion that Susan Sarandon can mess with my bat ANY time she goddamned wants.
