As the 2008 World Series aproaches and another baseball season ends, I am reminded of this 1988 movie that established kevin Costner as the viral all-American Jimmy Stewart-type leading man. He was born to play "Crash Davis," the experianced minor league catcher assigned to a young up-and-coming headbanger pitching sensation played by Tim Robbins.

The film helped establish Robbins as a major acting talent and also helped ressurect Susan Sarandon's career and establish her as a major star in the 1990s. In 2003 the Baseball Hall of Fame cancelled a planned showing of this film that activist Tim Robbins was to attend due to the backlash over Robbins' opposition to the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq.

The politically conservative Costner defended his former co-star's right to speak out as did Clint Eastwood who cast Robbins in MYSTIC RIVER. What a long strange trip its been...
