A sport where you are considered very good if you fail only 7 times out of 10 will naturally make you philosophical. As Costner's character explains, just one more accidental base hit each week makes the difference between playing in Yankee Stadium and a career in the minors. The movie speaks to philosophies of baseball and of life, and of the maturing process of not just the young hotshot pitcher, but also the career minor league catcher and the "groupie" (for lack of a better term).
It's also very funny and you can enjoy it as a romantic comedy.
