Review of Bugsy Malone (1976) by Liam C — 15 Jan 2014
This has to be one of the most nostalgic experiences I've had with a film, I remember seeing it as a child and I really enjoyed it, granted now that I'm much older, memories start to deteriorate but all I remembered is that I liked it and remembered a few scenes.
This wasn't how I remembered it, not to say it was bad or that I'm going to judge it based on memories because memories play tricks. The film was very good, unique and was very well acted. The child actors in this were really great! It proves that if you give children actual characters to play they can do it, well, that doesn't apply to every child actor, but even so it was very good and I'm sad that we pretty much saw none of them ever again and their efforts here seem unnoticed but at least they can say 'I was in Bugsy Malone'.
I noticed some problems. The whole thing with the splurge I didn't get, one minute it kills people, not sure how, but in other scenes it doesn't even affect anyone. I understand they're the replacement for bullets but consistency would be nice.
I also wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a serious drama just with children or a parody of gangster flicks, some scenes seemed very serious and others seemed very silly. I remember this film very differently, I remember it being darker, thematically and visually.
Now, I don't expect children to go around shooting and stabbing people but I thats how I remember it and I don't remember any songs. Speaking of the songs, they were great and really catchy. It was a really great film and I enjoyed it very much.
I probably remembered it differently because I was a child and it was a totally new experience to see a film like this but is a classic and will always be, its a time capsule movie!
