Review of Bugsy Malone (1976) by Thomas P — 18 Nov 2010
Gangsers like you've never seen them before. About four years ago I watched this and did'nt truely understand 1930's culture. Things like prohibition and speakeasies. Now watching it it's alot more fun to see these things put in in this all singing and all dancing musical. What makes this film interesting is that the whole cast is children. Seeing them take on more mature roles makes a great viewing. The famous tommy gun being replaced with 'splurge' guns is another interesting part of the film. The whole splurge gun thing does'nt really make since to me though, because throughout the movie it's used and kills off characters. Then at the end it doesn't hurt anyone.
The story is about a man called Bugsy Malone. He's not employed and just goes around finding jobs. He helps out his friend Fat Sam who owns a popular speakeasy (Fat Sam's Grandslam). Being a gangster Fat Sam and his gang has a rival byt he name of Dandy Dan.Fat Sam is trying to get his hands on the splurge gun meanwhile Bugsy has a relationship on his hands with Bloussey Brown, a woman who has been roaming the streets for a job. The story all comes into one big happy song. As strange of an ending it is it's full of happiness and peace.
A great film packed with humour and catchy songs.
