Review of Bug (2007) by Alistair W — 05 Jan 2009
A film that starts off well, but then becomes something truly...what's the word I'm looking for...rubbish.
The acting from all members of cast is great and the begining is a decent build up to the rest of the film, and whilst moments later in the film are quite disturbing, such as Peter (Michael Shannon) pulling his own teeth out or stabbing a man in a frenzy, it goes downhill from there.
What the film becomes is a government conspiracy concerning bugs that...eat people from what I saw. Now, instantly there are problems, why the US government would test such a weapon in public is beyond me for a start, let alone why Peter and Agnes (Ashley Judd) seem to be the only ones affected by the bugs whilst leaving R.C. (Lynn Collins), Jerry (Harry Connick Jr.) and Dr. Sweet (Brian F. O'Byrne) alone.
Towards the very end, well, what appears to be a decent thriller turns into a shambolic mess about Dr. Sweet (don't ask me about the name) being an android sent by the government, the army stealing Agne's son, injecting US citizens with microchips that turn people into brainless killing zombies since 1982 (with real Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh being a perfect example for a bizare reason) and the government infecting people through pizza.
Of course this all turns out to be brought on by drugs, shown especially when the motel rooms shakes from the army helicopters which Jerry (who is outside) can't seem to hear, see or also feel shaking the ground. The one bizare camera shot is the dead guy at the beginning and after the ending credits, which is never fully explained; you've no idea if it had already happened, or if it's just some random thing.
Definately not one I'd recommend, skip it.
