Review of Bug (2007) by Gary D — 16 Oct 2012
This movie got under my skin, there's no other way to put it. Dealing with paranoia that ramps up when combined with affirmation from another, this is a movie about things that feed and grow. Michael Shannon gives pretty good crazy in this, though it's way more over the top than his "Take Shelter" role.
Ashley Judd is less convincing, but does a respectable job. This movie shows it's off-broadway roots. It is a small production that takes place almost wholly in a motel room. The movie does go overboard near the end, but with real tension.
It's gripping and crazy. Seen as allegory, there is much to play with here. At the climax of the film I had to pause it to try and kill a palmetto bug that came up from my basement. He got away. Damn it.
