Review of Bug (2002) by Jason R — 30 Aug 2008
Ugh. This is an unremittingly grim and ugly picture that never earns its cynicism. The under-class milieu never seems anything more than an excuse for a "gritty" (re: sweaty) aesthetic, which is typical of Tracey Letts's politically shallow (though usually much funnier--there's not a single joke in this dour movie) body of work.
I suppose it's nice that Friedkin gets to work again on a (relatively) big stage, but he's apparently a big douche bag that deserved his demise, so even that's a small consolation.
