Review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) by Marcus W — 13 Feb 2009
Joss Whedon is a damn good writer of characters (Buffy's arc is predictable but still handled well), but when it comes to comedy he makes me want to cry (I HATED Xander in the TV series, passionately).
I really wish he'd stop trying to be funny because he is talented but he tries too hard when it comes to comedy and makes me want to pour boiling hot bleach into my eyes. Anyway, Rutger Hauer is stupid in this, Donald Sutherland is wasted, and Paul Ruebens is the worst vampire I have ever seen on TV, film, real life or otherwise - especially his death scene, it made me want to throw large blunt objects at the screen in the hope that he might stop.
So, to sum up I loved Swanson in this, but everything else was either tolerable (Luke Perry), or godawfully cringingly bad (Paul Ruebens death scene).
