Review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) by Derek D — 20 Jan 2012
The subsequent television series has a good bit more merit than this movie. It tries too hard to be funny and ends up striking an awkward balance between horror-action and clichà (C) teen comedy. I feel like this probably would have been better off playing it as straight horror-action.
The filmmakerâ(TM)s choice to be whimsical backfire and it definitely dissolves into cheesiness. Kristy Swanson was a good pick for the role of Buffy and I liked Donald Sutherland but the rest of the supporting cast were miscast or out of place.
Luke Perryâ(TM)s character as the damsel in distress character was not well conceived and could have been better. Pee Wee Herman does a pretty good job at infusing some comedy but the main bad guy, Rutger Hauer is terrible.
It is possible that you may get wrapped up in the cheesiness and have fun with this one, but it did not really work for me.
