Review of Buffalo '66 (1998) by Rick B — 21 May 2009
There was a lot of useless hubbub going around about Gallo's supposed treatment of Christina Ricci, so here's my summary of both the movie and that matter:
I don't understand you people, and I applaud Gallo for not coming back on his words.
I'm pretty sure he meant every word he said at the moment he said it: after all, I suppose he was under a lot of stress caused by putting together almost every piece of this wonderful film. And I repeat: almost.
Yet, as it happens, that's exactly what this movie is about: the matter of truth as seen by one person, from one moment to another.
As any sound-minded person should know, 'Buffalo '66' is - amongst other things - about the ongoing duality between one's internal, residual impulses (like self-consciousness, autism, traumas and neuroses - which are safe, easy and basic) and truthful, heartfelt emotions attacking one from the outside. Still, it's on a case-to-case basis to decide which one is the better decision to make.
I just feel sorry about having to rub your face into this obvious parallel. I suppose, since she hasn't replied, Christina Ricci also knows this, and is therefore smarter than the lot of you. Oh so sorry.
