Review of Buffalo '66 (1998) by Cita W — 12 Dec 2011
Is there a single thing I disliked about this film? Probably not. It's ridiculous in all the right ways. Gallo writes the character Billy Brown with so much heart that it's interesting to follow him.
He's not strange for the sake of being strange. His mother wishes that she didn't have him because she gave birth to him when the Buffalo Bills lost the game. She blames her absence. His father doesn't really listen to what anyone else has to say.
Everywhere he has looked for love in his life it comes up as a waste of time. So when he kidnaps Layla to meet his parents, he is pretty heartless about the whole thing. She begins to warm up to him, but that doesn't matter to him.
He doesn't really know how to react. We don't really get to know her character well, but it works. We don't need to. This is Billy's story. I feel like that is a huge problem with our school: if you have a character in many scenes of a film then you have to explain them like they are a main character.
I thought the photograph scene was hilarious. She kept wasting his two dollars! I just really felt like Gallo did everything right here.
