Review of Buffalo '66 (1998) by Roberto A — 25 Mar 2008
Completely absurd fantasy tale for losers, Buffalo 66 is a surprisingly appealing film in spite of itself. Gallo throws himself into the role of professional patsy Billy Brown so completely that I couldn't help but sympathize.
His pitiful, man-child gyrations and rationalizations are spot-on. Christina Ricci is, of course, the most glaringly implausible part of the film, but she's a good sport through it all. But the real star of this film is the city of Buffalo and its two insane archetypes, Billy's parents (played by Ben "Jackie Treehorn" Gazzara and Anjelica Huston).
The father is a sleazy, never-was lounge singer who was so cheap that he made everyone take baths at low water levels to save money. The mother is so obsessed with the Buffalo Bills (the house is completely decorated with Bills chotzky) that she rues the day she gave birth to Billy because she missed a big game.
A hilarious anthem to dreadful parenting, watch it with your parents...and everyone in your family will end up looking good.
