Review of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) by Paul S — 28 Jan 2008
Universal's big three return to stalk the comedy duo. The real coup here is Bela Lugosi's return to the role that made him a star. If they could have gotten Karloff to play the Frankenstein monster this movie would have been a true masterpiece, but Glenn Strange actually gives a good performance now that he's finally given something to do besides lie on a table. The monster even speaks for the first time since Bride Of Frankenstein. Not only does this movie succeed in blending comedy with horror, but for the first time, all three monsters are presented equally well, and play well off of each other.
The movie works so well that I'm willing to forgive the oversight in forgetting to explain Larry Talbot's relapse into lycanthropy after being cured at the end of House Of Dracula.
If you like Dracula, Frankenstein's monster or the wolf man, or possibly all three, this should be a pleasure to watch. If you also like to laugh, even better.
