Review of Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star (2011) by Michael C — 28 Feb 2012
This isn't a good film and overall it didn't do much for me; but the many who refer to it as the worst film of the year I would identify as incorrect. There is very little that's redeeming about the movie, this is true; there are a few moments that pulled a humorous smirk out of me, this is true but they were relatively scarce, and I'll also give credit to the fact that Christina Ricci has an innocent charm in this, and in a better written script I'd like to see her in a part like this again.
With that said the script is awful; the villain, or antagonist, or whatever you wish to call him in this film, doesn't seem to really provide any real resistance to the protagonist, and there doesn't seem to be any real inciting conflict in the film until the last 15 minutes of the film.
I almost feel if this had been done as if it were a "Behind the Music" expose' it might have actually worked a little better. As a straight movie it did little for me. I don't hate Adam Sandler the way several people do, but even for "check your brain at the door" light entertainment, Sandler's films have been utterly deplorable as of late.
This film is an improvement over Jack and Jill but still an embarrassment.
