Review of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979) by Frederick B — 12 Jan 2012
If you want a more authentic feel for the original comics, you may like the Buster Crabbe serials better (those are very entertaining in their own right,) but if you want something garish, campy, and ridiculous--look no further.
When I first saw this in high school, I thought Gil Gerard was the definitive Buck Rogers. I'm a sucker for the late 70's space opera genre, and this movie is a jackpot for me (as is the TV series.
) The story is pretty straightforward--Buck has been frozen since 1987 and wakes up in the 25th century, finding himself thrust into New Chicago. He begins adjusting to his new century (albeit small misunderstandings,) grooves a little to the nice disco soundtrack, shoots lasers, joins in to roast some Draconian rump, and makes cheesy innuendos along the way.
You have to see this movie and the series! Why the show was cancelled is disturbing, when today we have crap like Jersey Shore or Zooey Deschanel getting wayyy too much coverage. What ever happened to a fun and colorful adventure movie such as this and those that were made pre-1990? We are now officially a drugged nation of corporate zombie turds.
