Review of Buck (2011) by Thomas W — 30 Sep 2011
There has been an onslaught of super-serious documentaries these last couple of years on topics ranging from the financial crisis, African genocide to the disturbing quality of our food. It was nice to get a change of pace .
.. a dramatically different change of pace, at that. Buck is a documentary about Buck Brannaman, an American cowboy known by some as "the horse whisperer" (he actually helped Hollywood with the film of that same name).
Hearing Buck's backstory and seeing the person he has become is rather remarkable. The man is stoic and kind and patient and intelligent. He understand animals (horses, mostly) better than he understand people.
Some of the scenes with him leading a horse are marvels to watch -- I couldn't believe what I was seeiing while I watched parts of it. It isn't a flashy, in-your-face film ... it is a simple story about a man with complex past who has turned into a rather winning individual.
