Review of Buck (2011) by Mike C — 03 Nov 2011
Had this had a little more flair on the production side, it could easily be a perfect documentary. Like most good films, the story is simply there. Buck had a shitty childhood and grew into just one hell of a human being. On top of that, he's a magician at what he does. Just a great story all around.
From being a trick roper at the age of three, to going pro at the age of six, to enduring a very abusive father and the death of his mother, this guy is eventually schooled by some groundbreakers in the field who use patience and other tools instead of brute to train horses. Probably Buck becomes the best of them all, all the while raising his own family and sharing what he knows with horse people across the country.
I've been on a horse once, many years ago and only for a few seconds. But I love westerns. This documentary has everything good about a western: the scenic landscape, the principled cowboy, and majestic horses. I don't care to meet many people. The book and movie The Horse Whisperer was based on this guy so he was at one point maybe a minor celebrity. I don't care if no one ever knew his name. I'd love to hang out with this guy for a day.
