Review of Bubba Ho-tep (2002) by Christine P — 14 Jun 2010
At once hilarious, because it's about Elvis and JFK fighting a mummy at a retirement home, and truly frightening and disturbing in it's depiction of aging, Bubba Ho-Tep is the rare film that elicits empathy and laughter.
Campbell is today's great B-movie actor, and he plays Mr. Presley pretty straight here. He may say things that are absurd and funny, but they are deadly serious to him and there are multiple moments where his heartbreak and loneliness override any comedic subtext.
Ossie Davis has more over-the-top fun with his role as JFK, with dyed skin ("What better way to hide the truth?"). These two characters may or may not be who they claim to be (although all evidence seems to suggest they are) but they believe in themselves and each other.
Their determination is the key to bringing gravitas to what would otherwise have been a silly throwaway piece of comic book-styled historical fan fiction.
