Review of Brüno (2009) by Thomas W — 30 Apr 2012
At times hilarious and at other times truly offensive; but that is probably the entire point of the movie. I don't think I fully understand this film or the exact point of it. Borat played with people and made their ignorance and stupidity part of the joke; but in Bruno, most of this "ignorance" is manufactured and created for funny/uncomfortable situations.
I never understood if they were making a joke or making a joke (yes, you read that right). Borat was fluid and movied swiftly; but Bruno doesn't. It is staged scene upon staged scene (some scenes did make me laugh out loud; but that wasn't enough for the mindset of this movie).
I didn't understand the presence of Ron Paul or Paula Abdul. Was everybody featured in this truly ignorant of Sacha Baron Cohen? It tried to play that way ... but I had a lot of doubts. I think Bruno insults the target audience more than it does anything else.
