Review of Brüno (2009) by The Critic ( — 11 Aug 2012
Talented comedian Sacha Baron Cohen misses the mark with his follow-up to 'Borat' (2006) by simply trying to remake that runaway hit. As with his previous central character, Cohen had moulded Brüno from a compilation of stereotypes that would've worked well had he intended to evoke strong reactions from those around him.
Instead, his objective seems to be to annoy rednecks who, as the campfire sequence with three hunters displays, are bored with the proceedings, and this says a lot about the material since most of the action comes across as scripted and heavily staged.
Some laugh-out-loud moments make this worth seeing, but hardly worth revisiting.
