Review of Bruce Almighty (2003) by Laura A — 16 Nov 2012
Bruce Almighty is easy going, watchable stuff, it's the sort of film you will watch if it's on tv, but there are so many problems with it, namely ambition and imagination, it completely wastes what is an amazing concept, rife with storytelling possibilities on an extremely mediocre film.
For starters, our main character played by Jim Carrey, who God deems worthy of giving over his powers to for a week, is a total fucking douche, a successful man, with a nice home, Jennifer Aniston for a wife, and a job as a news reporter who still finds his life unfair, and feels resolutely beaten down by it all, and even throws a massive, embarrassing psychotic hissy fit live on air when he's simply not promoted to anchor, how are we in any fucking way meant to sympathize with this bi-polar, winning bitch of a man? he has a better, more together and more successful life than most of us will know and once again, his wife is played by Jennifer "fucking" Aniston, but still this is our protagonist.
Why dose God not give his powers to a homeless guy, or a no luck, suicidal dude whose life has truly hit a big brick wall, I've just mentioned two way more interesting versions of what this film could have been, and im sure there are a million more fascinating avenues to travel down, but this is hollywood, so lets not think too far outside the box I guess.
Sure it's funny, light and like I said, easy to watch if it's on, but this could have been this generations It's A Wonderful Life, instead of a below average Jim Carey gurnfest, with an intensely unlikable character at it's center and a confused message.
