Review of Brother's Justice (2010) by Steve S — 12 Jul 2011
*1/2 (out of four).
Dax Shepard wote and co-produced this painfully misguided mockumentary that misses virtually every target it is aiming at. It could have been a biting commentary on how the movie business works, but instead it is just a mindless set of unfunny situations.
Shepard pretends that a hired cameraman is following him around as he tries to get the idiotically plotted movie called "Brother's Justice" produced. He asks help from or has run ins with people like Tom Arnold, Ashton Kutcher, and Bradley Cooper.
The problem here is that a successful mockumentary like "This Is Spinal Tap" or "Best in Show" needs to at least have the appearance of being real. Nothing in "Brother's Justice" feels real. Every situation is obviously set-up and has zero feel of authenticty. Of course everyone is in on the joke, but they shouldn't appear like they are.
Shepard runs around acting like things are funnier than they actually are. I think he should have taken this in a different direction, like Sasha Baron Cohen did with "Borat". It might have had something to it if everyone wasn't in on the joke and some executives thought he was serious about this project. That would have been funny and showed an interesting angle to Hollywood.
