Review of Brothers (2004) by Thomas L — 18 Jan 2009
More potent stuff from Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier. I saw this in the theater when it came out in May of '05, then caught it again the other night on IFC. I'd forgotten how terrific this was.
Connie Nielson, after a ton of American movies, is terrific as Sarah, this mom of two little girls whose hubby is presumed dead in Afghanistan. I've found that when an actor doesn't have to create an artificial accent and can just be at home in their native element, their acting is all the better.
Such is the case here with Connie. The rest of the cast is terrific. The writing is sharp without making the drama seem artificial. Although in the end Michael isn't physically hurt, his mental equilibrium is really shaken up.
People like him aren't counted as casualties, which is obviously a gross shame.
