Review of Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) by Joe A — 25 Oct 2011
Director Christophe Gans takes a French legend and turns it into an exhilarating genre mash-up that only lacks a musical number to have all the genres covered. There's action, martial arts, intrigue, horror, romance and Monica Bellucci as a mysterious femme fatale, what more could a film fan want? Brotherhood stars Samuel Le Bihan and Mark Dacascos as soldier and taxidermist for the king, Grà (C)goire de Fronsac and his faithful Native American companion, Mani.
Together they are sent to the French countryside to find and destroy a legendary wolf-like creature ravaging the local villages. What they find is a conspiracy and villainy that may be far more dangerous and sinister then any monster as nothing is as it seems and some may be more then they appear.
A delightful and incredibly entertaining film from start to finish. Also starring the always intense Vincent Cassel and the beautiful Ãmilie Dequenne (The Pack) as Fronsac's love interest. To describe anymore would be to ruin a really unique and sometimes breathtaking movie.
A sterling example of what movies are all about. One of my favorites.
