Review of Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) by Blake B — 14 Jul 2009
I didn't know what I was getting into when I rented this on a whim a little after it came out on video. At first I thought it was going to be a kung-fu movie, then a Jane Austen period piece, then a horror movie, then a murder mystery, and finally a vengeance-fueled actioner. It is all these things, and wonderfully so. The visuals and action sequences are beautiful, as is the language throughout. I'm actually not turned off by subtitles as a lot of people are (actually, I'm completely turned off by dubbed movies), and I can fully enjoy a movie like The Brotherhood of the Wolf in its own language.
I was surprised that I enjoyed a movie so much that had no big name actors, English, nor any idea of the story before getting into it. I think anyone going in without knowing anything about it will actually feel similarly surprised, and I recommend watching it this way.
