Review of Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) by Jonathan A — 26 May 2009
In 18th century France, a vicious, mysterious beast terrorizes the countryside and two warriors set out to pacify it. An odd yet mildly entertaining smorgasbord of period, kung-fu, mystery, horror and man vs.
nature sub-genres. However, the film's weakness comes at it's overlong nature to divert it's focus too exclusively on subplot and supporting characters rather than the main conflict that is initially presented at hand.
From then on in, it's basically "Jaws" in Baroque-era France with a little bit of "Predator" thrown in the mix. I think I was a victim of false advertising when I went in expecting this to be a little more action packed, because quite honestly, the special effects, cinematography, fight choreography and editing during the film's more tense moments were it's strongest points.
Still, I enjoyed it, with some reservation for the long stretches of exposition. This review is based on the director's cut.
