Review of Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) by Bill B — 02 Nov 2009
After watching a History channel special on the attacks in the French province of Gévaudan, my brother asked me if I had seen the movie based on those events. He went on to tell me that the Brotherhood of the Wolf is the name of the aforementioned movie, and that it is his favorite movie ever made.
Needless to say I was very excited to watch this movie, and did so as soon as it was possible. Sadly, I was sourly disappointed. It is part period piece, part Cassonova, part John Wu ridiculous karate, part Last of the Mohicans (which was nice).
Oh, and there is a beast murdering women and children all the while. I tried to like it, I really did, but what really hurt it is the flow of moods. It needed to consistently retain a serious tone in order to be effective, but the director chose to have the heroin transition from wolf hunts to sexual escapades among the French Aristocrats without skipping a beat.
Don't watch this movie, even if your sibling tells you it is the best movie ever made. Siblings are stupid.
