Review of Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) by Jean Carlo C — 05 Apr 2012
Quite how I let this one slip by I'm not sure, but it's instantly become one of my favourite French films. The elegance of the dialogue, writing, costumes, music and timing is quite unusual these days. A film that blends many genres and presents a warm story, watched in a period where most box-office movies have none.
There is something very intimidating about the noble characters, not only through beautiful dialogue and costumes as mentioned before, but also expert portrayal. To watch this and compare it to La Haine for instance will give a very clear idea of the versatility of the language.
Perhaps the character development was a little erratic, or the martial arts out of place, but I struggle to think of anything genuinely worth mentioning that would cast a shadow over this.
