Review of Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) by Jonathan B — 17 Jun 2012
A stylish, fictional account of the story of the beast of GÃ (C)vaudan, a large wolf-like creature reputed to have killed nearly 150 people in France during the 18th century. The movie is a kind of a monster / martial arts / Dan Brown mash-up with a touch of Last of the Mohicans thrown in.
The direction by Christophe Gans is slick and sumptuous with great use of camera work. There's a good cast and the costumes and sets are beautifully realised. The beast itself is an interesting creation and provides a few scares but the plot is a bit rambling and by incorporating so many cinema genres, the movie fails to completely satisfy any of them fully.
There's just not enough monster action, not enough karate and not enough religious mystery to be completely absorbing but it makes a nice change from the average horror/mystery.
