Review of Brother Bear (2003) by Kevin R — 23 Feb 2014
The story of a boy, who became a man, by becoming a bear.
An Inuit tribe is filled with young men trying to understand their assigned totem. One day, they encounter a bear that leads to one of the young men's deaths. The brother of the young man swears revenge on the bear responsible for the death of his brother; little does he know, his brother comes back to life as a bear. The brother, now a bear, encounters an orphaned baby bear that needs help finding his home. The two bears begin on a journey; but the blood thirsty brother is on their trail...
"There's scared and there's surprised.".
"Then you looked like both.".
Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, who worked together on Pocahontas, Mulan, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast projects, delivers Brother Bear in their directorial debuts. The storyline for this picture is very unique to the genre and entertaining to watch unfold. The animation style is a little higher quality than similar pictures like Pocahontas and Mulan. I also thought the voices were well selected and they include Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Clarke Duncan, Rick Moranis, and Estelle Harris.
"He did look better as a bear.".
Brother Bear is a movie I had never seen so we watched it recently off Netflix. I was a little disappointed and thought this could have been better based on its premise. Unfortunately, this is just an above average picture that is fun to watch with your child a couple times but isn't worth adding to your DVD collection.
"Don't upset the spirits.".
Grade: C+.
