Review of Brother Bear (2003) by Saiqa K — 12 Apr 2014
Kenai is the youngest one among three brothers who would always wish to become a man. One day an old lady gave him this little bear as his totem and told him that when he finds the love of a bear he will become a man.
Kenai's totem was a bear so he has to love everyone around him. His elder brother's totem was wisdom and their belief was in spirits. Kenai always wanted to see his hand's print on the wall in the category of ancestors.
That is why he wanted to become a man so eagerly. He would mess things all the time. "The Moran are a special group of young men who have particular responsibilities. They are responsible for protecting the community".
One time during a fight with a big bear, Kenai's elder brother Sitka lost his life saving him. Later on the bear got killed by Kenai and he was transformed into the bear by his brother's spirit.
As it mention in world religion book, "As birth is believed to be transition from the world of the spirits to the world of the living, death is a transition back to the spirit world" (63). Kenai was told that if he wants to be changed back into a human, he must travel to the place where the lights touch the Earth.
In the indigenous religion people believe that once something dies it returns back to the world in a different shape. They do not consider death a final state and death is a change to another spiritual state.
Kenai sets off his journey and along the way he met a young bear named Kodai, after a while he felt that he likes being a bear. He realized that not only humans are scared of bears; bears also think that humans are big monsters.
When the time came and Kenai got transformed back into his original shape he decided to change back into a bear and live that life forever. Spirits make all of the magic changes of the world and they helped him changing his body.
This movie relates to the World Religion because they showed how Kenai was transformed into a bear by the spirits also Kenai could see Sitka transforming in other spirits. Indigenous religion beliefs are about spirits and their magical power.
