Review of Brooklyn's Finest (2010) by John M — 10 Aug 2010
A great sleeper of a find. It's a cop drama focused on three unconnected cops (Don Cheadle, Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke) in Brooklyn. They may not know it, but all of their careers are about to culminate at the same place.
This was such a diamond in the rough for me, because pretty much everybody I knew skipped this one, and I ended up really digging it. It's Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) doing what he does best, and that is telling gritty cop stories.
It is weird how it works, because it manages to avoid all those police cliches, but at the same time, the framework for all of the leads are all walking stereotypes (a cop on his last week before retiring, a cop deep under cover, and a cop struggling to get by).
.. there's a lot more depth there, you'll have to just trust me. It's all a very delicate balancing act switching between these cops, because each one of their stories are strong enough to stand by itself and still be good.
It all works because the acting is all first-rate; I've never been the biggest Richard Gere fan, but he turns in a great performance, and probably my favorite from the ones I've seen, holding his own next to two heavyweights.
This is an authentic feeling movie, and is probably the best cop drama I have seen in the last three years.
