Review of Brooklyn (2015) by James R — 22 Jan 2016
A really good movie. Brooklyn is a film about a young Irish girl named Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) who leaves her older sister and mother behind in Ireland to move to Brooklyn, NY. In Ireland Eilis has no opportunities, so she moves out to the USA to get a job and study for book keeping.
America isn't quite what Eilis expected. She's home sick and has no real life outside of the boarding house she lives in. It all changes one night when she attends a dance and meets a young Italian guy named Tony (Emory Cohen) who she eventually falls in love with.
Eilis visits Ireland after a tragedy strikes and has to decide what she really wants. The comfort of a familiar home and people or a life with Tony and new opportunities. Saoirse Ronan is extremely likeable and that helps out a lot here because throughout the film I was rooting for her character.
She has to make some tough choices throughout the film and you really see her character develop from the beginning of the film. There are some great sweet moments in this film and I recommend giving it a look if you have a chance!
