Review of Brooklyn (2015) by Brian G — 27 Jan 2016
A coming of age story set against the backdrop of an Irish girl immigrating to America, "Brooklyn" reminds you how great this country was for Europeans in the mid 20th century and how great it continues to be for those from countries with less opportunity trying to make a living here.
There is not a false note through the entire movie -- the girls and the boarding house mistress are not the evil stepsisters another movie would have made them, but a funny and protective group guiding the girl as she adjusts to life in the New World.
That you are so invested in the young girl getting over homesickness, falling in love, and having to decide between Ireland and New York is a testament to Saoirse Ronan's performance. She is simply excellent in this role.
The chemistry between her and the Italian American boy she meets in New York could not have been better. I also enjoyed the film's score and costume design -- the pastel colors of the dresses Ms. Ronan's characher wears throughout the film are appeasing to the eye.
"Brooklyn" is funny, sweet, sad, and most importantly real.
